2017 Fall Meeting Presents New Technology, New Ideas

At the 2017 Fall Meeting, held in balmy San Diego, over 80 member and non-member representatives attended and participated in Technical Committee work sessions, interactive Technical Discussion Forum sessions, educational programming and industry networking.

xxxDuring the Educational Session, Todd Buchholz, a nationally-recognized expert with experience as director of economic policy for the George H.W. Bush White House, discussed the current landscape of the economy, both economic and political, with a focus on forecasting impact on the global oil and gas industries. Buchholz provided unique insight into the changes that are becoming apparent as the US moves toward energy independence. Buchholz touched on the advances in manufacturing technologies and where the manufacturing sector is headed, with analysis on how the current administration’s policies may impact manufacturing.

The General Session featured updates on WSTDA membership and Board activities, as well as liaison reports from the various organizations with which WSTDA cooperates, including a report on the WSTDA Scholarship Program by program chair Mandy Masters.

Two WSTDA Member companies provided presentations on new product developments: "Nylon-Like Sling Webbing" presented by Della Picken, Belt-Tech Products, Inc., described Nylon-Like Webbing, a polyester yarn combining the benefits of Nylon and PET, a new product which behaves like nylon in terms of enlongation, tenacity, durability and resistance to alkalai with the low moisture regain, stiffness, heat/US/acid resistance benefits of PET.

“The Development of Synthetic Chains with Dyneema®" was also presented by Ralph Abato, Doleco USA, and Bill Fronzaglia, DSM Dyneema. Replacing steel with synthetic link chains with Dyneema®, certified worldwide by DNV-GL, is a leap forward in securement and lifting operations.

WSTDA Relaunches Quarterly "Quick Pulse" Survey

WSTDA’s Board of Directors is re-launching the Quarterly “Quick Pulse” Survey of Members, a benefit exclusive to WSTDA Members. The survey program provides industry leaders with insight to gauge the current and future business environment to compare to their own operations and help guide their business forecasting and planning.

WSTDA’s quarterly Quick Pulse Survey is the only source for the overall outlook for growth, employment, demand, margin expansion/contraction, supply shortages (labor, goods) and exporting activity in the web sling and tie down industry. It is a useful tool for analysis by business owners who need to gauge the current and future business environment to help guide their business forecasting and planning.

Broad participation in the quarterly Quick Pulse survey is paramount, so that results truly reflect the industry as a whole. Following the end of each calendar quarter, WSTDA emails a survey request to one person at each member organization. No company’s individual responses are released; only an aggregated report is provided to WSTDA members. Be sure to participate in this free service provided by WSTDA by responding to the 2018 1st quarter survey, found here.

All Members will receive a quarterly “Quick Pulse Survey Report” sharing aggregated data, approximately three to five weeks following the survey release each quarter.

WSTDA Participates in AWRF "P.I.E."

AWRF, or Associated Wire Rope Fabricators, held its 2017 Fall General Meeting and Product Information Exhibition (known as “P.I.E.”) in Minneapolis in October 2017, and WSTDA participated as an exhibitor.

On hand to share information about WSTDA Recommended Standards, manuals, WSTDA safety products and WSTDA Membership benefits were Rob Snyder, chair of WSTDA’s Load Securement technical Committee (pictured, left) and Jeff Iden, WSTDA President.

WSTDA Webbing Identification Marker Program

As a service to the industry, WSTDA maintains a Webbing Identification Marker program. WSTDA is the recognized entity that issues and keeps records of weaving companies who have requested and have been issued specific color codes and numeric positions to identify their webbings.

The purpose of webbing identification markers is to provide a method to positively identify a webbing source of manufacture, while the product is in the field.

To be eligible, the company must be a manufacturer of synthetic webbing as defined in WSTDA T-4 Synthetic Webbing Used for Tie Downs and/or WSTDA-WB-1 Synthetic Webbing for Slings. Color codes shall not be issued to companies that do not manufacture webbing but only utilize webbing as a component of fabricating synthetic web slings and/or tie downs. Specific color codes and numeric positions may not be sold, assigned or transferred. Any change in ownership of a weaving company shall require new identification markers to be issued.

Both member and non-member weaving companies within and outside the United States are eligible to be assigned specific color codes. The service is complimentary to WSTDA Member organizations in good standing; for non-Members, a fee applies. Click here to download the Webbing Identification Marker Application.
