WSTDA 2019 Annual Meeting in Cancun

May 6-9, 2019 • Marriott Cancun Resort • Mexico

Four decades ago, Cancún was a deserted island and few even knew of its existence. Today, with more than 22 million visitors each year, Cancun is Mexico’s most dynamic city, having become the country’s largest tourism resort and the most prosperous city in the Yucatán Peninsula. It is also the Caribbean’s premier destination, surpassing even the Bahamas and Puerto Rico. Click here to learn more about Cancun.

WSTDA has selected Cancun for its 2019 Annual Meeting location, and the Marriott Cancun Resort, specifically, to provide attendees with a unique Mexican oceanfront experience, exceptional Marriott service, and plenty of opportunities for dining, shopping, spa services, and recreation without having to travel elsewhere. The Marriott Cancun Resort and adjacent JW Marriott, at which resort guests have privileges, provide all you need for a productive and relaxing visit to sunny Cancun.

WSTDA Members are eligible for significantly discounted hotel room rates in the WSTDA room block. These discounted rates are available starting May 1, 2019 and are good through May 14, 2019, so plan a few extra days to relax in this beautiful resort! WSTDA Guest room rates are $149/night plus tax (resort view) or $174/night plus tax (ocean view). WSTDA has also negotiated a waiver of the customary $25/night “resort fee” – a significant savings for our Members who book their rooms in the WSTDA room block! Book your group room now. Registration for the 2019 Annual Meeting will open in February 2019. DETAILS

Fall 2018 Meeting Recap

WSTDA’s Fall Meeting brought industry experts and leaders to the Mile High City in October. There were nearly 100 attendees, including eight first-time attendees representing some of the six new Member organizations that had joined since the 2018 Annual Meeting in May.

The meeting provided the Technical Committees with time to work on advancing their projects and programs, and for all attendees to participate in collaborative discussions on proposed revisions to WSTDA warning products. DETAILS

WSTDA’s Scholarship Program, launched in 2013 and promoted widely to qualified WSTDA-member employees and their legal dependents, attracted more than 25 applicants who competed for two merit-based awards of $3,000 each to help with tuition and educational expenses for attendance at a qualified college or university.

The 2018-2019 Scholarship recipients are:

Barnes was honored with a South Carolina High School League Scholar Athlete Award, Clover Optimist Club Scholarship, Roosevelt Community Watch Scholarship and Life Scholarship.

Barnes will attend University of South Carolina in Columbia and earn a bachelor’s degree in biology, with the goal to become a dermatologist. Barnes was sponsored by WSTDA Member Carolina Webbing.

Expert Witnesses
by Gerard Panaro, WSTDA Legal Counsel

Given the importance of expert witnesses in products liability cases, it may be informative for WSTDA members to know something about the legal rules governing qualifying someone as an expert, whether the expert will be allowed to testify in court, and what sorts of things expert witnesses testify about (including experts for the plaintiffs, as well as the manufacturers or other defendants).  DETAILS
