Two WSTDA Scholarships Awarded for 2015-2016
WSTDA has awarded two Scholarship grants for outstanding merit in academics and community engagement for the 2015-2016 academic year.
Haley C. Mabe, a student at East Tennessee State University, sponsored by Greg Ashley, President, Ashley Sling, Inc., a WSTDA Member Representative, was awarded a $3,000 grant for educational expenses as she pursues a degree in Biology with a minor in Social Work, with a goal of attending medical school in the future.
Also awarded a $3,000 grant was Renee E. Kulik, a graduate student at the Washington University School of Medicine's Program in Occupational Therapy, who was sponsored by Frank Kulik, Sales Manager for Oppermann Webbing, Inc., a WSTDA Member Representative. Ms. Kulik plans to work in occupational therapy upon graduation.
The WSTDA Scholarship Program seeks to give back to its membership community through its merit-based application and grant program. For the 2015-2016 academic year, nearly 20 applications were received and reviewed in a blind scoring process; scoring was based on a combination of academic achievement, work and community involvement, and expression of educational goals and leadership abilities. The grant may be used for educational expenses including tuition, room and board, fees, books, and supplies.

2015 Fall Meeting Education and Discussion Forums Planned
An education session on rope slings, and how they compare/contrast to web slings and roundslings, is now confirmed for Wednesday, October 7 during the WSTDA 2015 Fall Meeting in Providence, RI. In addition, the Load Securement Technical Discussion Forum session will feature a presentation by Luke Loy of FMCSA, who will discuss research and testing of synthetic web tie down straps initiated three years ago. Public Invited to Comment on Winch Standard Revisions
Following approval by the Load Securement Committee and the WSTDA Board of Directors, draft revisions to WSTDA T-3, the Recommended Standard Specification For Winches Used With Synthetic Web Tie Downs, are now available for public review and comment through May 28, 2015. April 2015

Public Comment Invited on Revisions to TH-1 Thread Standard
The Web Sling Technical Committee and the Board of Directors of the WSTDA have approved the draft Recommended Standard Specification for Synthetic Sewing Threads for Slings and Tie Downs (WSTDA-TH-1). WSTDA thanks it's Member and non-Member thread manufacturers for their review and input on the draft revisions for synthetic sewing thread. The draft is now being made available to the public for review and comment through March 26, 2015. The revisions to TH-1 may be downloaded from the "Standards Review" page along with instructions for submitting comments. WSTDA invites all interested parties to submit comments to improve the recommended Standard. February 2015
2015 Scholarship Program Applications Now Available
The Application Form for the 2015-2016 WSTDA Scholarship Program is now available. This program, an exclusive benefit for WSTDA Member organizations and their families, available to all employees and their legal dependents of organizations that are Members in the US and Canada, in good standing. WSTDA Scholarships are merit-based awards, intended to help offset educational expenses at an accredited college or university for qualified students in any field of study. Academic achievement, community service and extracurricular activities, as well as responses to short essay questions, are considered in the selection process. February 2015

New Office Location
The WSTDA Headquarters office has relocated from its former Bel Air, Maryland location to larger offices in Forest Hill, Maryland, about 45 minutes from Baltimore. The new Newport Drive address is posted on the website. Members, please update your records! December 2014

Webbing Standard Revisions Now Available for Public Comment
WSTDA's Web Sling Committee, with the approval of the Board of Directors, invites public comment on its draft revisions to the "Recommended Standard Specification for Synthetic Webbing for Slings" (WSTDA-WB-1). The draft is available for comment through December 29, 2014.
This draft Recommended Standard Specification applies to class 5 and class 7 synthetic webbing used in the manufacturing of synthetic web slings. The Recommended Standard recommends construction, identification and marking of class 5 and class 7 synthetic webbing. WSTDA Warning Labels to Feature Narrower Width, Lower Cost
Effective December 1, 2014, WSTDA warning labels will be resized from the current 2 ¼" to a narrower 1 7/8" width, offering a more streamlined format for attaching to web slings, roundslings and tie downs. The WSTDA Board of Directors has approved a price reduction for the narrower labels, passing along a cost reduction due to the change in label size and material required to produce the labels. WSTDA Members to Vote on Adoption of Two Revised Standards
Two WSTDA Technical Committees have completed revisions to Recommended Standards, and seek membership approval to publish new editions of the WS-1 web sling standard and the T-1 tie down standard. WSTDA's Web Sling and Load Securement Technical Committees have revised the WS-1 and T-1 Recommended Standards, and are seeking general membership approval on revisions. Ballots have been issued to voting members, seeking approval of the final draft revisions. Once membership approval is confirmed the revision drafts will be published and will replace the current editions of the Recommended Standards. WSTDA Elects Directors; Officers Appointed
The members of the Web Sling & Tie Down Association (WSTDA) elected its 2014-2015 Board of Directors at the 2014 Annual Meeting, held May 6-8 in Charleston, SC. The Board of Directors also appointed the association's Officers for 2014-2015.
Jeff Iden, Cargo Equipment Corporation, Elgin, IL was elected to serve as President of the Association. Iden's term as president comes on the heels of a successful Annual Meeting with strong attendance. Interest in WSTDA membership remains strong, with a record 126 member companies.
Supporting Iden is a strong cabinet of Officers including Vice President Greg Pilgrim, Murdock Webbing Co., Inc., Central Falls, RI; Secretary/Treasurer Jim Bailey, Filtec Precise Inc., Tabor City, NC; and Immediate Past President Tom Wynn, Peerless Chain, Winona, MN.

Prior to the recent Board action, the publications were offered for sale in print or electronic format; now, users may visit http://www.wstda.com/products/standards.cfm to download the publications in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) on a complimentary basis.

WSTDA Quick Pulse Survey: An Outlook on Your Business Environment
WSTDA's Quarterly Quick Pulse Survey helps business owners gauge the current and future business environments to compare to their own operations and help guide their business forecasting and planning. WSTDA's Quick Pulse Survey is the only source for data about the overall outlook for growth, employment, demand, margin expansion/contraction, supply shortages (labor, goods) and exporting activity in the web sling and tie down industry. It is a useful tool for analysis by business owners who need to gauge the current and future business environment to help guide their business forecasting and planning.
Broad participation in the quarterly Quick Pulse survey is paramount, so that results truly reflect the industry as a whole. Following the end of each calendar quarter, WSTDA emails a survey request to one person at each member organization. No company's individual responses are released; only an aggregated report is provided to WSTDA members. WSTDA Launches Scholarship Program
WSTDA Member representatives in the US and Canada are now eligible to apply for the new WSTDA Scholarship Program, set to award up to two $3,000 merit-based scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year. Application packets are now available for download; the deadline for submission is June 30, 2014.
