Web Sling
Committee Report
By
Steve Schroeder,
Web Sling Committee Chairman
The Web Sling Technical Committee
completed another successful and productive meeting last October 2 in
Las Vegas. Many issues, ideas and opinions were brought
up and discussed at length.
We decided that due to lack of interest,
the In/Out of service tags, due mainly to the continuing advancements of
RFID technology, would no longer be addressed. The Web
Sling warning sheet prepared by Greg Babinchak has been approved by
committee with the UV criteria included and will be forwarded to the
Board for final approval and printing.
A wear protection report obtained by Mike
Gelskey has been sent to WSTDA headquarters. A proposed "Train the
Trainer" program has been tabled due to anticipated exorbitant costs.
We are still working on the "Contact Area
Ratio" proposal
to the Board. An Ad-hoc committee consisting of Greg, Fred Ambli,
Charles Lucas and I have been developing a protocol to possibly form a
joint WSTDA/AWRF technical committee. This would help sling users
determine acceptable shape, size and fitting applications for use with
web slings. Mr. Ambli suggested that slings used in a recovery mode,
such as the recent Minnesota bridge failure where load weights are
unknown be considered. It was agreed that in the next revision of WS-1
additional verbiage will be
discussed on this matter.
As we go forward to our Spring meeting in
Rhode Island, we will be focusing on two products that the association
produces and distributes. First, is the Pocket Charts that have been in
the works for sometime. I have a mock up of a possible finished product
which will be reviewed at our pre-meeting the Saturday before the
meeting officially begins Sunday May 18.
Secondly, our Web Sling Video is under
review by all
committee members whom will submit comments and suggestions to me on
Saturday if they haven't already. I would be remiss if I didn't mention
that this will be my last technical committee meeting as chairman. The
last three years have been very enjoyable and beneficial. I think we
have done much to promote safety and the health of our industry.
Thank you to all participants for making
this task very rewarding.
