Web Sling Committee Report

Another productive meeting of the Web Sling Technical Committee was held in May at our Spring Conference in Scottsdale.

During the Old Business section of the meeting it was agreed to table the review of warnings until a human factors expert has performed a review of all WSTDA’s warnings. We also discussed and agreed to begin referring to T/D or P/D as “Contact Area Ratio” in our ongoing testing exploration.

The committee is reviewing WS-1 to determine which charts and graphs to include on the proposed pocket cards. I relayed some quotations on 4 panel / 2 sided pocket cards in different sizes and finishes. Also, an ad-hoc committee was formed to research and develop in-service and out-of-service tags that we have been looking at for the past several meetings.

During New Business RFID chips in slings and tie downs were brought up as well as a suggestion for an ad-hoc committee be found to look into issues such as data-sharing, limitations, group purchasing, etc. However, the committee voted for no action to be taken at the current time. A “Train the Trainer” program on inspection, care and use practices was urged. This has been forwarded to the Board of Directors for consideration.

Greg Babinchak did an excellent job reviewing proposed UV language to be added to the Web Sling Warning Sheet with many issues debated. The committee will be meeting in advance of the regular Fall Conference in Las Vegas as well as corresponding via emails and telephone calls to expedite and produce vital information for the industry.
