Tie Down Committee

During our last meeting in San Francisco from May 7^th – 10^th, we had an excellent and very effective tie down committee meeting. First, vice chairman Ralph Abato gave an overview of the last NACSS harmonization meeting: marking and labeling of anchor points, the rub rail issue, making a new standard for friction mats and cargo securement for closed vans were discussed.

This was followed by a presentation of the results from the adhoc committee for the review of WSTDA T3 (winch standard). Prior to the next meeting in November, the whole tie down committee will get the latest draft for comments, so during the next meeting we will discuss and review this version to send it afterwards to the board of directors for final approval.

A discussion came up to make a standard for load binders followed by a general discussion to create standards for new products. Therefore it is necessary to change the scope of the organization. The committee voted on a motion to ask the board to change the scope to include cargo control items which are not synthetic based.

Finally the committee decided to create an “out of service manual” for tie downs. The format can be a pocket format or a wall chart or both of them. It is important to show with full colored pictures which items can be used and which items have to be removed from service.
